I know this might not be a Road Runner, but it is its cousin b-body car. I have a 1974 Dodge Charger and I've changed the battery, alternator, alternator regulator and the battery still won't charge up. When it is the car will turn on, but when I disconnect the battery it turns off. Took the alternator back to the store to have it checked and the supposedly it works fine. Do you have any idea what it could be would really appreciate if you could answer, really need to get my car running to show it off. Thanks. |

I have a 1969 Pillar car that has what I believe to be the decor interior. Can anyone tell me if this option had bucket seats? The car I bought has the interior pulled out and in boxes. The previous owner started to restore it, but never finished. Any info. on what the decor interiors options might have been would be greatly appreciated. |
Without a fender tag, the bench seat came standard, but yes, the bucket seats were an option. |

I know this probably isn't a good question but here it goes. Is there anyone located in FL or South FL that has a Road Runner or know of Road Runner groups down here? I own a 1973 Road Runner and would be great to find some other Road Runner guys down here. Dan |
I live in Orlando FL. There are a lot of 'Runner around down here but no specific Road Runner clubs I know of, however there are tons of Mopar clubs in the state. I am a member of the Mighty Mopars of Orlando. We meet the second Saturday night of every month at Orlando Dodge from 6PM to 9 PM or so. |

Hi. I'm writing a book on Chrysler f-bodies. If anyone has pics and/or stories about Volare-based Road Runners, I'd like to hear from you. If you have anything regarding Volares or Aspens of any sort (especially Taxicab use--having a tough time finding stuff) please let me know. Thanks. |
Check your fender tag or broadcast sheet to see if either are listed. There is a possiblity anyone may have changed/added the trim on the car. |

I have a 1973 Road Runner, and am wonmdering how rare it is cause I can't find even a pic any where. Well I'll tell you about it, its not that impressive. Has 360ci engine. White not restored yet. automatic. When done its going to be hemi green, with blue lines. Any help or comments. Plus a pic would be great. |
There are several web sites that address the 73 Road Runners. Year One has a great website plus an excellent parts book for the "B" body Mopars. I would advise you to get some of the available restoration books and manuals and do some research before beginning turning the first bolt. I too had a 73 Runner, at the time I sold it I didn't know it was one of 117 440 GTX option Runners that were made that year. If I knew then what I know now.... |

I have a 1968 Road Runner with a 383 engine in it. I was recently taking off the right header pipe to the engine block and when I removed the 5th bolt that fastened the header to the engine, antifreeze came out of the hole? My question, is this normal and do some of these bolts protrude into the water jacket or is this indicative of a leak from the water jacket into exhaust manifold pipe. I would appreciate any help in this mystery? |
Yes, some of the studs/bolts for the exhaust manifolds on the 383/440 heads go into the water jacket. Be sure to put some antisieze/sealent on the threads when it goes back together to prevent leaks.
This is normal, the water jackets are inside. Either coat the bolts with sealer, or, as I do, use studs to slide the headers on (of course, coat the studs with sealer also). |

I have a 1975 Road Runner and I have been searching the web for production totals, but can't find any. I know it's around 7,700, but that's all I've been able to find. Mine has a factory sunroof and I would like to find some extra info. If anyone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks Mike |
You have a one-year-only vehicle. 1974 was the last year the Road Runner was its own carline. in 1975 the Road Runner was an option package on the 2-door Fury line. The VIN should start with RM21. Production total was 7,183. for comparison, that year they made an additional 53,666 two-door Furys. This doesn't include the Dodge Coronets built that year. in 1976 the Road Runner became a package for the Volare line. I got this info from the "Standard Catalog of Chrysler, 1924-1990" by John Lee, 1997. |

I have a 1968 Road Runner with the original 383 that I am restoring. My question is, this Road Runner has roll-up passenger windows, not the push out type. I have checked the VIN and tag and it is a Road Runner, how rare is this option? Thanks. |
The roll up rear windows were a result of an additional model. The early 68 Road Runners were considered "coupes" or a "post" car with the tilt out rear windows (VIN begins RM21). Plymouth later added the "hardtop" model that had the roll up rear windows that resulted in the post being removed allowing the entire front/rear window area to be open (VIN begins RM23). I believe you could order either model through 68. I don't have the exact number with me but in 68 there were something like 20-30K coupes and about 15K hardtops sold. There are a lot of websites that can provide data such as this. One of the best is "mymopar.com". I am also completing a restoration of my 68 Runner. There are several books from companies such as YearOne and Jim's Auto Parts (and many more) that specialize in Mopars. They have several restoration books on the "B" body Mopars that contain a wealth of knowledge on just about any part of your project. I would strongly recommend getting these books and studying them before you get too involved in your project. They all have websites with their catalogs on-line for viewing and ordering.
According to my Dodge and Plymouth Red Book, Chrysler made 15,358 hardtops, 29,240 coupes for 1968.

I just picked up a 1970 Road Runner, and can't really figure out how rare the car actually is. It is a hard top, air grabber car, FJ5, bucket seat, black and white interior, 383 4 speed, with the oddest combo of a white vinyl top. Pretty loaded w/rear defrost, dual mirrors, complete trim package. Does anyone have any idea how many of these may exist with this odd interior and vinyl top combo? Also have a restoration project not yet started for sale. It is a 383, 4 speed, bench seat, California car. Needs restoration. Non matching 383HP, and 4 speed included. Jeremy @ 440-487-3885 |

Hey folks. I have a 1969 Road Runner and a 1979 Road Runner. The 79 is new to me, and even though I know its a Volare, it's still one of 1122 with the Road Runner package, 360 4-barrel, a/c and nice leather seats. It will be a great, comfortable, driveable tagalong for the wife to drive to shows. I have no idea where to find parts or clubs which are dedicated or even include these rare notreallymusclecars. Can anyone help me? I just purchased the car on ebay, and its real cherry, very nice surprise as the Volares famously rot in bad places. This one is so stock and clean I really want to do things right. Thanks in advance for any help. :) |

I want to put front disc brakes on my '68 Road Runner. Will the parts I need work from a '73 Duster? If not, what year Dusters will interchange front disc brakes to a 1968 Road Runner with drum brakes? |
Yes, the a-body can swap, go to Moparaction.com for their tech article. if you already have the parts. I'm not crazy about using old, used brakes. I got a new setup from Master Power brakes. |

Looking for a part typically found on 1968/69 GTX and Road Runners, but I don't know what it is actually called. What is the the chrome strip that runs between the wheelwells just below the door on the bottom edge of the car exterior. I am sure it was an option piece. I assume it is a stone chip guard of some kind but have never seen it listed on any restoration sites. So, first what is it called and second does anyone no where to get a reproduction piece. |
They are called rocker panel moldings. The clips that hold them on are available from r/t specialties.
I bought a set some years ago, but I can't remember the name of the company.sorry. I think it is called metro......something.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1974 Satellite that I put a 383 in and when the trany (727) had been rebuilt, I have had problems that it won't go into reverse at all. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be being over looked when this was rebuilt. The person that has rebuilt it twice for me and now has given up and just going to buy one that is complete and ready to put in. I don't want to waste the one I have over something minor. This one is completely rebuilt inside just can't get it to go into reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
I assume that you have looked at the linkage and determined that the shift linkage is going into all the correct detents. You can unhook the column or floor shift linkage at the transmission and manually put the transmission in each gear and check for operation. If the linkage is off just a little the transmission wont work. If you mess with the linkage, be sure to do it VERY safely with GOOD jack stands and have help standing by.
I do not know if this is the answer to your problem, but I had a 1970 727 that I had lost reverse twice in and it turned out to be a crack in the reverse drum. |

I'm rebuilding the engine in my 69 RR, the original exhaust manifolds looked great before removal, had a rust free very natural look. Now that they have been tampered with they look as though they had been painted and I would like to duplicate it as some has now fell off. Anybody had any experience with this your help would be appreciated. Thanks |
Have them sandblasted to remove all old paint , rust, etc. Several companies (such as Eastwood) have exhaust paint that duplicates the color of cast metal. After sandblasting, don't handle with bare hands, clean them with a good paint thinner and follow manufacturers directions for applying the paint. Several light coats always works best. If you paint them, when you start the motor, only run it for a very short time, maybe 30 seconds and shut it off. Let the exhaust cool and restart the motor for a longer period such as 2-3 minutes. Repeat a few times lengthing each time. This can help bake the paint and keep it looking better longer. Good Luck.... |

Does anyone know where to get the decal to put on the side that shows the dust trail coming from the running bird if it were to be located just in front of the door? It reflects the birds running path down the length of the car. I saw it once on a car but cant locate the sticker on the market. If anyone knows, let me know. Thanks DJ |
Your decal can be found at either Paddockparts.com or YearOne.com. They both have the dust trail decal you are referring to and others as well.

Just pulled out my #match 383 it is 040 over looks like new pistons, but at tdc they are about 1/8 inch below deck ht. I worry about comp being too low. Shouldn't they be even or above deck? Any help apprec! |
You didn't mention a lot of the details. What year and what heads do you have? What type and thickness of head gasket was factory? Check on the internet or Mopar dealers for an old service manual. They have the specs that will tell you the piston depth at TDC, the volume of the heads and the correct thickness head gasket. All the things are a factor. You can still have a reasonably high compression (10:1) motor with the piston "in the hole" with the correct head gasket and a set of heads with a small combustion chambers. The piston depth is just one factor. |

I just purchased a 1969 Road Runner that is in need of a lot of work. It has a column shifter but I would like to put a console in it. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase a console and/or a steering column that does not have the shifter on it? Any help would be greatly appriciated. Looking forward working on the car and discussing different topics here. |
There are a lot of salvage yards that specialize in Mopars. Places like Totally Auto have website listing a lot of their parts. Do some searches on the web like "Mopar parts" or "mopar restoration". You'll be surprised how many places there are. If you don't have any luck, Email me back and I'll send you the links I have found.
As a second option leave it there, add on to your shift lever( on the tranny). Hook up the linkage and use it. Its much easier to see then the floor shift. Its lit up at night. that is if your going to use a cable shifter. or you new linkage won't interfere ? worked for me.

Saw your posting about going to a 26" radiator...don`t do it. I have a 26" rad. in a 22" opening now don`t cool any better. go to Mancini Racing web site and they have a direct bolt in aluminum 3 row radiator...very nice I saw it at the nationals in August...that`s the way I`m going anyway. Hi. Could someone help me out and explain how to remove the shifter handle from the shifter box? It is a '69 shifter box, with a non pistol-grip handle. It looks like the handle just pushes into the mechanism. I've tried slipping a 1/2" wide feeler gauge in, but it is very difficult. On one side, the feeler gauge goes down quite a bit, but does not release the handle. On the other side, it only goes down about 1/4". What's the trick? Is the feeler gauge too wide? Do I have to attack it with another type of tool? Any help you could give would be appreciated!!!! Thanks! |

Is there a web site I can go to and down load a wiring diagram for a 1970 Road Runner for free? Even if someone knows of a site I have to pay for please drop me a line. We put this car on a dyno a couple weeks ago and it's putting out 414rwhp and 458ftlbs. It's not stock of course, 470cid, 4spd. It used to be lemon twist but now it's faded yellow with nice primer highlights and a pinned open air grabber scoop. :) It runs great but the poor old thing has been around the block a number of times and the wiring is in need of some help. Some poor old 70's hippy's hacked in several sounds systems over the years. :) Thanks, Scott |
Go to "ClassicCarWiring.com" and check out their full color wiring diagrams. The color coding matches the wire colors on the car so it is really easy to track down a problem. They are very reasonably priced and are a lot easier to follow than the factory service manual. I have one for my 68 Runner and has been a great help plus it is laminated so it is dirt and grease proof. |

Has anyone installed a Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition on a 383/440 with a ballast resistor? If yes where did you connect the red wire? According to the instructions it should go on the ignition switch side of the ballast resistor. I would like to keep everything as stock looking as possible so I really don't want to cut and splice too many wires. |
I installed a Pertronix on my 1965 Barracuda with a 273. It is simple. The red wire goes to the start side of the coil. The direct 12v feed. You can takea a wire and simply shore the two sides of the balast resistor. Pertronix requiires 12v all the time. You will love it. |

How can I tell by the VIN# what month that a car was built? I have a 1969 GTX that was built in LA and I want to know the month it was built. Thanks for any help that you can give. |
The VIN# doesn't actually say what month the car was built. The serial number could give some clue if you knew when they built some of the numbers in the sequence. The best places to look would be the door of the car to see if the sticker has survived or the left front fender well for the fender tag. The bottom line of the fender tag should end with the order number and to the left of it should be something like B30, which is the projected build date. |

Hey guys, I need some advice. I live in Australia and collect and love American muscle cars. I am looking at buying a 1968 Road Runner matching #383, 727 auto, power disc brakes, power steering, factory air, factory split bench seat & 8 3/4 posie the car is in exceptional condition, 100% original even the paint however it does need a respray. The price is $18000 Australian which would be about $8000 in U.S dollars any thoughts on whether its a fair buy how much are they going for in the U.S.? thanx |
For a solid body, complete drivable car, anywhere from $5000 to $25,000 U.S. |

Hey guys, it me again with the 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus. I have a new problem now, my starter is turning my engine over, but I am not getting any spark. My coil gets an initial spark but then nothing. I have replaced everything. Control unit / ignition module, ballast resistor, voltage regulator, everything. The problem started 2 days after I swappwed out the coil and the plug wires with MSD ignition parts. It ran great for 2 days, then this started. My friend got a wire tester that tells you if a wire is positive or negative and both terminals on my coil are reading negeative with it. I thought maybe my positive wire was grounded, but It wasn't. One thing though, when I bought the new control module, my old one was a 5 pin and the one they gave me is a 4 pin. Does that matter?? The paperwork that came with the new module says it does not matter?? Any help you all could give me would be greatly appreciated. You all have seemed to know exactly what was wrong everytime in the past!! =) Thanks guys!! |
You didn't say if the "negative" reading at the batt(ery) and dist(ributor) terminals on your coil were the same voltage. With the ignition switch "on" (like the engine was running, NOT START) you should have 12-13 battery volts on the battery terminal of the coil. If you check the other side of the coil, usually marked dist., you should also have 12-13 volts. This is a valid check because the engine is not running and there is no current flow through your coil or ballast resistor. This voltage should be measured from ground (negative battery) and the coil terminals.
Your wiring is fairly simple. From the battery, voltage goes to the control unit and through the dual ballast resistor (one side is for the control unit power, the other is for the coil itself) to the batt(ery) side of the coil, through the coil, out the dist.(ributor) side and back to the control unit where it is switched "on and off" by the transistor circuit that is controlled by the pickup coil in the distributor. The coil produces the high voltage spark when the control unit switches the primary voltage "on and off" that is timed to the camshaft. It just performs electrically what the old points systems did mechanically.

I have a 1969 Road Runner, 383 4spd. When I bought the car last year, the old wiring harness was heavily damaged so I replaced it with one I bought on ebay. Most of the switches were disconnected from the old harness when I got the car. However, when I installed the replacement harness, I could not find where to plug in the reverse light (since it was disconnected when I bought the car). I checked the harness and (unless I am missing something) could not find a place for it to plug into. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I have a 1968 Road Runner. 440. My friend was following me the other day and my speedometer was between 55 and 60. He said I was actually doing between 48 and 50. My tach was showing approx 2800 rpms. When my speedo is between 75 and 80 mile per hour I am doing 3500 to 4000 rpm on the tach. I was told i had 3:55 gears. I ran the ratio with a my 26 inch tires and it said my final ratio was in the 4.x range. Would the rpms be about right for a 4.10 or so final ratio? Thanks |
Put a piece of tape on the tire and one on the yoke, rotate the tire one revolution and count how many revolutions the yoke turns, in your case with a 355 gear it should be three and a half turns. |

I own a 1973 GTX I know that there was 749 made but I would like to know how many were Richard Petty blue. If any one could help I would aprecite it. Thank you |
I don’t have an exact number on the Richard Petty Blue, but I have seen them at shows and it is said to be a VERY Rare option. Also, for the record, they only made 117 Road Runner/GTX 440’s in 1973, ALL of which were Automatic. They made 749 400’s with a pistol grip. |

Where do I look (again) to find if my 1968 Road Runner is a matching numbers car? I thought one was near the oil pan, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. The other is stamped on the top of the block.....right? Thanks |
My Mopar restoration guide says the ID# on the 68 block should be on top of the block around the drivers side bell housing area. The number will also be stamped on the transmission. The engine information will be on the pad under the distributor. Mine has the letters HP 2 near the bottom and D383 toward the top. The D is for the 1968 model year and of course the 383 is the cubic inch. Any other symbols on the pad are for things such as under or oversize bearings, etc. |

I have what appears to be a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner loaded with power steering, power brakes, air, front dis, correct steering wheel, stripping and all badging. The VIN number starts with RP the P stands for premium price class the way I understand it. Most Road Runners VINs start with RM is it possible mine is a real Road Runner or is it a cloned Satellite? |
In 1973 the Road Runner VIN started with RM.
Satellites started with:
RK = Police
RT = Taxi
RL = Satellite
RH = Satellite Sebring Custom
RP = Satellite Sebring Plus

From bumper to bumper, how long is a 1969 Road Runner? And how long is a 1970 Road Runner? I need to know if either will fit in my garage. Thank you |
According to the 1969 Plymouth sales literature, the overall length for the Belvedere (Road Runner) is 202.7 inches. |

I have a 1968 Road Runner that I am restoring. Currently, I am attempting to get the torsion bars off the car. I have unloaded them and removed the appropriate hardware, but I do not have the tool to push them back for removal. Has anyone removed the torsion bars and can you give me any tips or tool sources to remove them? I don't want to start hammering on vice grips because I am afraid of damaging them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Randy Hlavac |

Hello, can anyone clear up a headrest issue? I like to know which headrests are correct for a 1969 Road Runner? Are they the small oval harder plastic with a chrome band around them? Or, the wider softer type? |
Remember that headrests were not mandatory on Road Runners until 1/1/69. I know your asking a question between 2 headrests, but a correct restoration would have to address the issue of headrests at all first.
My 1969 Road Runner has the oval headrests with the chrome band. I have bucket seats.
Mine are original, but are not small or oval. They measure approx 12 inches wide by 6 inches tall. I have bench seats.
The ones I've seen are this...bench seats don't have the chrome band, bucket seats do. |

I have a 1970 Road Runner. It has a 383 engine. It was given to me by my father 19 years ago. 15 years ago I had the outside totally done. It has been sitting in my parents garage since then. The reason I have not done anything with it is I finished college, got married, had kids and now live 100 miles away. I was wondering how much money would it take to get it road worthy again. It was drivable when it was placed into storage. It has 127,00 miles with the original clutch. I don't want to sell it! But I do want to drive it again. Thank You for any advice - Emil Stenger |
That seems to depend on the car. I got my first '69 after it had sat outside(Ohio) for 10 years. It had no care in that time. I towed it home, and after changing the carc (leeked like a sive), got it running in no time. Ran good unless I tried to go up hill, then it died. Changed fuel filter, carb, pump. Finally dropped the gas tank. Inside looked like the Titanic! Tons of rust. Put on a new tank and ran great. After that just gave it a tune up. Did the same with a '67 Charger that had sat in the woods for 12.
I would check the brake lines(metal). Usually the line that goes from the front to the rear rusts where it runs along the frame. I would have the carb rebuilt, probably drop the gas tank to check for rust and any holes. Since your car has a lot of sentimenal value too, I'd go over the brakes. New mater and wheel cylinders, all the metal lines, check the brake hoses. Cheap parts to insure your car.
Depends what you want to do with it and how much work you can do yourself. If you want to totally restore it to like new condition with body work, sheetmetal, paint, interior, glass, chrome, engine, drivetrain, and the list goes on, you better have some deep pockets. I would guess if you can do most of the work yourself you would be looking at least $15 -$20,000 in parts. If you hire all or part to a restoration house I have no idea what the tab may go to. I would guess at least in the $30-$40,000K range. If you just want a daily driver, get the basic drivetrain and brakes working well and work on it as time and money come available. You will enjoy the car as you restore it. Believe me, it can get hard to stay motivated when you work on a restoration for years without being able to hear it run or take a cruise.

Lexol Vinylex Protectant. This is what I use on my 1969 Road Runner top and it works great and in some places hard to find a lot of BMW people use it and I think it is the best thing I have found. |

This is not just a Road Runner question but maybe one of you guys have had this problem. I have a 1969 Road Runner with a 383. I first purchased a set of DynoMax headers and had a problem with the spark plugs on the left side. Had to have the header lose to put the #3 plug in. DynoMax told me they never had that problem before send them back we will send you another set didn't want to mess around so I traded for a set of Hooker Comp. Ceramic Headers which I thought was a good move. Now I put them on and the pitman arm on the left side hits the bottom tube. Hooker tells me they never had that problem. By the way the heads are stock. I am hoping some one out there can help me out. Thanks |
I have problems with my manifolds. I usually use a 13/16 deepwell socket and put a crescent wrench on it. Were you able to get the headers on without loosing the head? I used a hoist and undid the motor mount. |

I am in need of a bumper to bumper wiring schematic for my 1969 Road Runner... Does anyone have one to share, sell or can you recommend where to find one??? Thanks for any help you can offer.. |
You can still purchase the factory service manuals for your car from ebay and many of the restoration businesses such as Year One, Jacks Auto Parts, etc. The factory manual is hard to visually follow but it has a wealth of information. Jump on the internet and cue up key words like "muscle car wiring" and you may be surprised how much help is available. |

Need some help on a paint question. I have a 68 Runner with the PP1 Matador Red paint code. By the PPG paint chart it is more of a dark almost burgendy red. The floor pans and other original areas in my car are a much brighter red. Also,in many of the original factory sales brochures, all of the RoadRunners are the brighter red. The red looks the same as the Dodge Charger ad pictures. Even in restoration books most all of the 67,68,69 red cars are the brighter red. Does anyone know the true story of what was available or is correct. The PPG paint dealers don't know anything other than the mix code for the dark red. Thanks in advance for any help. |

1969 Road Runner ... build date 10/12/68
I know my vehicle should not have headrests, but someone recently mentioned another "quirk" of the early 1969 production.
I'd just like to confirm its accuracy?
Should my car have the small trim pieces (8 all together) that are attached to the seat backs? (bench seats)
Mine does not have them, but the interior was done about 20-ish years ago, and I always "assumed" they had been left off in error??
Thanks very much! |

Please help!! I have a 1971 Road Runner with 440. For some reason when I go over 3000 rpms the car fries the tach, ballast resistor, Ignition control module, radio etc. I have replaced all of these parts at the same time only for it to run great for a few days then fry itself again. I also have put in a new altenator and voltage regulator and also a mopar ICM that says it can handle 7000 rpms, not the case. Any help would be appreciated |
Strange Problem. You need to see if it is an alternator output problem or something else. Find someone that has a DC voltmeter that can measure your battery volts. Without the car running you should have around 12 volts across the positive and negative terminals of your battery. Start the car and at idle your alternator should supply about 14 volts to your battery measured across the same positive-negative battery terminals. SLOWLY increase you engine speed up to around 2500 RPM and see if the alternator output stays in the 14 to 14.5 volt range. If it keeps going higher (over 14.8) with RPM increase there is definitely something wrong in your charging system. That is the purpose of your voltage regulator, to keep the alternator output at a reasonably constant voltage. Since you have replaced the regulator, there may be a wiring problem. |

The 1973 Road Runner I purchased was painted last year supposedly with 3 coates of paint and then clear coat. However, there are circles that you can see which I guess I can't get out unless it is repainted. I would like to wax it but don't know what to use. Does anyone have an idea of what product would work ok? |
Any number of car waxes are really good on clear coats. I prefer the Maguires brand and most can be purchased almost anywhere that sells automotive supplies: Advance Auto, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. Since you have new paint don't get any wax with a lot of cleaners in it. Just get waxes that say things like "polishing glaze" and state they are safe for clear coat finishes. You don't need a cleaner, just a light wax to remove road film and give protection from the elements and flying birdies. |

Hi, I got a 1968 Road Runner. It's matching # according to the last owner. I can see the numbers on top of the Bellhousing for both Transmission and engine. What I cannot find is the HP stamp on the ID pad near the distributor. Can anyone can tell me if there's suppose to be a HP stamp on the engine? I know the 1969 Road Runner did. Any help would be appraciated. It's a 1968 RR so not a 1969, where there's lot's of info on. Thanks, Eric. The Netherlands. |
In 1968 383 did not say HP on the block they do in 1969.
I have a 68 Runner with a 383 numbers match engine. On my pad under the distributor it has on the upper line "D 383" which by the Mopar Restoration Book I have says the "D" is for 1968 model year and of course the 383 is the cubic inch. Toward the bottom of the pad, the letters "HP" are stamped and just above the line is the number "2". Again, by the Restoration Book, this HP 2 is suppose to be on the engine and denotes that it is in fact a 1968 High Performance engine with the 440 heads, cam, exhaust manifolds and windage tray and factory rated 335 horsepower. The restoration book also mentions that if the engine was replaced under warranty, that the pad will be blank but the engine should have a tag riveted above one of the block's freeze plugs. I forget which one. Any other symbols mean various things like undersized bearings, etc. |

I have been having starting issues with my 1969 Road Runner. When I turn the ignition the lights come on but nothing... the problems started when I tried to remove the heater box under the dash. Until I realized the studs go through the firewall and hold the starter relay in place. I put everything back the way it was, reconected the starter relay to the firewall and nothing. I am new to the hobby and any help would be appreciated. This particular car has wiring issues due to the previous owner. I am considering re wiring the car with a painless harness. How much would be reasonable for a professional to do the rewire? Thank you, Daniel Clancey |
I take it your car started before you tried removing the heater? Then go backwards. Make sure you have your starter relay hooked up correctly. Can you jump the relay and get the car to start? Make sure your firewall connections are tight, as well as the ignition switch. I had to replace my dash harness on my '69. Someone had hacked it up pretty good. Found one in a boneyard. That one on ebay I sent you would be a good deal/ Hope this helps.
You have a Fuseable link that goes to your starter relay on the firewall. It comes form the wire harness just above and to the left of the starter relay (facing the firewall) If this opened up because of a short you will get no starter action at all. It should have the words "Fuseable Link" on a tab attached to the wire. I think it goes under the connection labeled Batt (ery) on the starter relay.
I had a similar problem one time it was the small wire on the starter being lose check the nut for tightness, second time the red cable from the battery was corroded at the starter end of cable inside of crimped fitting replace it. |

I have a 1968 Road Runner. I purchased a new dash to replace the existing cracked pad. However, when I went to remove the old pad, I discovered I had no idea how to remove the old pad. There seems to be no way to reach the nuts. Does the windshield need to be removed to get access to the dash pad nuts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
I am going through a dash rebuild on my "68 Runner also. Taking the windshield out will do nothing for you. I disassembled my entire dash to the bare shell. I removed the glove box door, interior cardboard tray, fill panels, radio, knee pads , ashtray, switch panel, reverse light, ignition switch and the speedometer cluster so I could paint my dash properly. Even with all this removed, getting to the nuts under the dash to remove the dash pad is a chore. I know this doesn't help a lot but this gives you an idea of what is ahead. |

I just bought a 1973 Road Runner
which had been painted. Does anybody know the exact
placement of the Road Runner decal on the trunk lid as
it seems to go a different place on each year car? Also
how do I go about getting replacement seatbelts as they
seem to be a little short? I am new to this and it is
really exciting but requires a lot of knowledge which
I guess you just have to acquire as you go along. Thanks. |
My 1973 has the bird decal on the truck lid (centered) over the Road Runner badge on the passenger side or right rear corner. My car is original so this should be correct for yours as well. |

I own a 1970 Road Runner, and I believe it was one of the last ones made for 1970 or possibly the last one. There are a few reasons why I believe this such as, it has the highest sequence number I've ever seen, it was made in July of 1970, and so far I have found 4 broadcast sheets in it that match and 3 were whole. My question is: Does anyone else know that they have the last one or what the VIN number for the last one is? Any other information pertaining to the last 1970 Road Runner built would be extremely helpful. Thanks |
I have a 1970 Road Runner RM23V0E166155,
build date of 07/24/70. According to Govier that was
the last day of production for the LA plant for 1970
year run. I think different plants used different #'s
as I have seen #'s higher than mine. Don't know if that
helps or not. |

Did the 1968 Road Runners have 2 different radiator supports? My '68 has a radiator support that should be for a 22" radiator. I have seen in factory literature pictures (one even with a HEMI) of 68's with the round top 22" radiator. A lot of pictures show them with the 26" square top radiators. Thanks in advance for any and all help. |
1968 Road Runners with 383 came with 22" radiators with 3.23 with 3.55 or 4.10 a 26" radiator. A 1968 Road Runner with air 26" radiator. A 1968 426 hemi Road Runner had a 26" radiator, it did not come with a 22" radiator. |

The 1968 Road Runner that I purchased has extensive rust holes in the front frame area (near torsion bars). The car had been sitting on dirt, under a lean-to roof, for almost 30 years, and although the top of the car is in good solid shape, the bottom is a disaster. Does anyone know if anyone makes reproduction frame sections for the front frame area? I know the rear sections are available, but I haven't seen any front sections. Is this fixable, or should I just scrap the whole project, look for something in better shape, and use this one as a parts car? If it is fixable, what would be the best way to go about it? Should I have the frame patched, or would it be better to find a solid front frame from a Satellite and replace mine with it? Is there anything else I can do? Your advice would really be appreciated because I don't have a lot of money to put into this, and I don't want to wind up with something unsafe. The car itself is a stone stock, numbers matching 383 w/ auto on the column, with only 19K miles. It starts and drives, and sounds absolutely beautiful. It even has the original build sheet, fender and vin tags, and Road Runner keys. I don't know if that really makes any difference or not, but I just thought I'd throw it in. |
It is difficult to say without actually seeing the extent of the rust, but I would say, have a professional do the job, the structure should be mig-welded properly & accurately. As far as the car, my opinion would be to definitely restore it! As a low-mile numbers car, do not part it out! If you don't have the means to do so, please, just sell it to someone who would do the restoration.
Used front frame sections are availble, repair sections are also being sold. Several ads are listed in the different mopar mags. With the used and repair parts, no job is not worth doing. From what you said about the body, it sounds like a great project. |

I have a 1974 Satellite that I am putting a 383 in and it oroginally had a 318. When I got the car it had no motor or trans. and now that I i'm close to getting the motor done I am kind of confused about how the motor is going to mount in here. It looks like there are 2 mounting brackets off of the k member, but I have nothing on the block, which I know I have to buy. Is this a 2 piece mounting bracket? The reason I ask is because the brackets on the k member are y shaped on top like something would sit in them not bolt through them. Any help would be really great. You guys always come through for me on questions so thanks in advance. |
Your car has a small block k-member you will need one for a big block car which will bolt right on and you are in business. |

A word from a Belgian Mopar nut here. I just bought a 1968 Plymouth Sport Satellite (2dr ht, auto. trans, column shift) and it has 2 separate front seats (driver seat in bad condition). I would like to change this with a full front bench seat. Is this possible? If so, is there a store that sells complete bench seats?
Is there anyone who owns a 1968 or '69 Satellite, GTX or Road Runner with the 1969 color code B3 Ice Blue? I think it would look great on my Satellite but I'd like to see a clear picture before I decide. All help is greatly appreciated. |

I had a 1973 Road Runner, 340, 3 speed car. I put a 4 speed in, no problem. I would think the 1971 would be the same. But just to be safe, I'd measure both trannies. |

Can anybody please tell me what these seats might be out of? This is delaying my interior resto.
|
The front is a mystery, but I'd say the rear is out of a GTX, possibly a 1968. The GTX's had the chrome Plymouth emblem in the seat like yours.
Looks as if the fronts are out of a 1970-72 Chevelle |

Hey there, seen your letter on the web, been dealing with these cars for awile. I think they will fit just fine.
All 1968-70 B-Body seats will interchange. You can put Charger seats in a Road Runner, etc... |

I have a 1968 Road Runner with a 1969 Charger 440. What engine temperature should that engine run at? |
Most all older Mopars had a 180 degree F thermostat. If you have a good radiator, the right coolent level, a properly spaced fan ( if clutch equipped make sure it is good and not slipping) and a fan shroud, your Mopar should run at 180 with no problem.
If you want to check your gauge for a correct reading ( I have seen them waaaay off making you think your engine is hot), you can simply measure the temperature of the radiator water with a thermometer with the engine running and up to operating temperature. That way you will know for your particular gauge and sending unit where 180 degrees is. I usually remove the radiator cap, start the car and let it come up to temperature. That way you avoid the possibility of getting burned removing a hot radiator cap. |

I am interested in building a Superbird clone. I can't find any sites that sell parts and give prices. Can you tell me of any sites I can find these parts at? |
There are some vendors which carry some parts for the
Superbirds - Year One and The Paddock. Currently I am not aware of
anyone reproducing the rear wing or the nose cone so
those parts will have to be acquired off a wrecked car
and are prohibitively expensive. Also there are a lot
of engineering details to consider.
1. If you do happen to acquire a nose cone and rear
wing you can't just bolt them on and go. The Superbird
was a 1970 Road Runner that had been modified to accept
1970 Coronet front fenders which in turn were modified
to accept the nose cone. The rear wing was supported
inside the trunk by special reinforcing beams which
helped spread the downforce load created by the wing,
otherwise the rear fenders would crumple into the trunk.
2. Special A-pillar wind deflectors were installed to
help reduce aerodynamic drag.
3. To have a nearly perfect clone you would need the
special rear window glass and the plug that was installed
in place of the stock rear window frame by Creative
Industries. The new rear window was installed to smooth
air flow over the car. If you notice - all Superbirds
sold to the public came with vinyl tops. this was because
it would have been too expensive to smooth the body
work necessary for the rear window plug. All the people
at Creative industries did was install the plug and
rear window, primer everything and send it back to Chrysler
where the vinyl top was installed.
There were also a number of special body gaskets and
fasteners used in the Superbirds as well. If you want
to make a clone it would be best to find someone with
a Superbird who would allow you to take photographs
of everything so you could get as close as you possibly
can to making a viable clone. Otherwise you are likely
to have a very bad replica that might be unsafe as well
as unattractive. Worst of all you would be taking a
1970 Road Runner and most likely ruining it in your
efforts - and why do that? If you have a 1970 Road Runner
put it back into standard Road Runner trim and enjoy
it - they are more rare than the 1968-69 models and look
better besides (in my opinion). Good luck. |

Use the existing holes on the sides of the upper radiator support, install the pins with a dab of paint on the tips & slowly close the hood to mark the spot to drill the hood holes. |

I'm having a lot of trouble finding the flasher that operates the blinkers. What is the location under the dash? |
Hi Kelly - on a 1968-1970 model the flasher unit should be just to the right of the ignition key on the bottom tray of the instrument frame. It will be approximately half way between the ignition key and ash tray. It will greatly help if you remove the ash tray and ash tray frame. Its easy to do - a total of maybe 8 screws - and it comes right out. Once you have everything out of the way you can look into the hole and see the blinker module . It is round and will have a connector wire plugged in from the top. You may need to pry it upwards to get it out but usually they lift out without too much trouble.
Good luck |

No, the '68s and "69s are different. The '68 tail lights are straight ascroos, while the '69s are at an angle. You could change the tail light housings to use the different years. That's what Sox&Martin did to update their '68 to look like a '69. |

In decoding a 1970 Road Runner conv. I recently purchased I ran across codes I have been unable to find and some confusion as to what they mean, the fender tag reads...end n96 p31 r11 v8w 26?(under screw) g33 j25 l31 m31 n95 v3w a01 a31 b51 c16 c55 eb5 p6b5 eb7 902 041984 e63 d32 rm27 nog 112809.... I have most of it decoded, the ones I cant find and the confusion are what and were does eb7 belong, 902, the p6b5 are the bucket seats, does that mean it has reclining buckets and overide the c55 code? Any help would be greatly apreaciated....thanks |
EB7 is B7 blue. 902 means Sept 2, 1969. P6B5 means B5 bucket seats. It appears as
though you have a two-tone blue interior because EB5 and EB7 are listed separately. |

I have a 1969 Road Runner, and the fuel gauge and the temperature does not work. I've looked under the dash and there's no wires hooked up. |
No wires connect directly to the
temperature or fuel gauges. Their input from their sensors
come through the round multi-pen connector that plugs
into the instrument cluster circuit board just behind
the speedometer. The circuit is completed through the
circuit board that is part of the instrument cluster.
If you can get a service manual, it is your best source
to trace the wiring from the sensors through the gauges.
The wiring is very simple and the problem should be
easy to find. One thought, if neither gauge is working,
is the 5 volt regulator that supplies the voltage for
the gauges plugged into your dash circuit board? Sitting
in the car, it should be on the left end of the gauge
assembly, with 3 flat prongs that plug into the circuit
board. If there is one in it, it may be bad. If no voltage
is supplied by the regulator (it regulates the 12 volt
battery power down to 5 volts), nothing will work. Good
Luck...

Can someone tell me what the difference is between GTX & Road Runner? Which one is "so called" the top of the line between the two cars? |
The GTX was the "top" car as far as creature comforts. You got woodgrain dash and door panel treatments, power steering and brakes came standard, carpet. And chrome trim. The Road Runners were "supposed" to be plain jane, rubber floor mat, no power acessories, all horse power. |

I have a 1969 Road Runner I am rebuilding I am doing the suspension and my delema is that I am not sure if I should use rubber or poly bushings any info would be a great help. Thanks |
Are you keeping the car long term? Then go with poly. If your letting it go, then go with the cheaper rubber.
I used poly grafite and added a rear helwig sway bar what a difference. I used energy suspension out of Ariz. It is usually in the mags, but I talked to a couple of drag racers and the said to use them they are a straight up co. The front of the rear springs, there are two sizes and when ordered they told me it would be the smaller size. When we rebuilt my car the small size dropped right thru so I called them and without return they sent me the right ones and I sent the other ones back after the car was together. |

I'm planning to put American Racing Torque-Thrusts on my 1969 Road Runner (manual drum brakes). 15 x 7 in front and 15 x 8.5 rear (they don't make 15 x 8). Will the rears fit OK?. I've noticed people using 15 x 8s but not 8.5s. Also, any suggestions for disc brake conversions (front and possibly rear) that will clear this set-up? |
I talked to Stockton Wheel and they said if I wanted to run 275/60/15" use 41/2 back space on the rear and brakes. There are a bunch of vendors out there but you can use a body discs from a donor or junk yard cheaper most applications require 15" or bigger no 14" rims. |

The hood stripes you are referring
to are painted on and are on the hood and fender. The
following dimensions will help you locate them: From
the centerline of the hood offset 5-3/4" outward. There
will be a total width of 11-1/2" of the car color in
the center of the hood. From the edge of the fender
offset 2-3/4" inward toward the center of the hood.
Total width of the stripes is approx. 24". |

I am looking for a service that does reproduction fender tags. All i have is my vin number RM23NIG----. I do not care if the repro. tag says clone on it. I just want a fender tag. thanks. |
Without the build sheet there is no way to make a fender tag because the build sheet will have all the codes that go on the tag. The VIN has very limited info - hardtop/sedan/convertible, engine size, assembly plant and build sequence number (for that particular plant). No options are listed in the VIN. If you do not have the build sheet (usually located under the bootom of the rear seat) you will need to check with the previous owner(s) of the car to see if one of them has it. Without the build sheet you are out of luck. |
